Managing Electrical Waste at College of the Rockies

The research project focuses on College of the Rockies and how e-waste is currently handled, and potential options for change. This project consists of an interview, survey, and secondary research.

The interview for this project was with Rene Pelletier, Chief Information Officer, and Kyle Brown, IT Manager. The questions focused on the current methods College of the Rockies uses to handle e-waste.

Secondary research consists of mostly other similar sized colleges and their sustainability reports. Looking to see what others have in practice and the policies they have in place. The research also looks at the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System also known as STARS. STARS is a possible sustainability reporting system for College of the Rockies that is used by many other colleges.

The survey for the research project was to measure the student body's knowledge of e-waste. Seeing how much the students know of how to recycle e-waste, and how concerned they are about it. 15 questions were asked to gauge their interest and knowledge with a few at the end to gather ideas and desires form students. This survey was an add on to the project to gain knowledge and see student interest in e-waste.

Conclusion

The overall conclusion of this research was, that College of the Rockies is doing a good job with their e-waste. Other colleges of similar size don't report or do anything special with their e-waste besides follow government standards. College of the Rockies could benefit from more open reporting and providing more general information to the students. General information like where to take e-waste can be really helpful for students. Information can be in the form of a poster or more in-depth like seminars to teach more about e-waste and its effects.
